Cost of Ownership

The cost of horse ownership goes far beyond just the initial purchase of the horse.

*NOTE:  These prices vary depending on location, facilities, and services provided.

Expenses

 

Annually

Board or Stabling fees if you do not have a place at your home designated for your horse.  (Full board usually covers grain, and cleaning stalls, but be sure to check with the facility to find out what is included in the cost).

**The cost of unforeseen medical problems such as falls or if your horse gets sick, can easily exceed $800.  Or, if your horse needs colic surgery it can run more than $5,000.  If you can afford medical insurance for your horse you will have something to fall back on if you need it.

MiscellaneousDon’t forget to figure in the cost of additional supplies such as brushes, blankets, lead ropes, halters, bridles, bits, saddle, saddle pad, girth, buckets for feed and water, and stable tools such as pitch fork, broom, and wheel barrow.  You will also need to consider replacing items when they can no longer be used.

 

The expenses listed above total a minimum of $5, 863.00 annaully.  This is just an average and the cost will vary.  Be prepared for the unexpected.  Getting in over your head can take the fun out of owning a horse.
